The Giver takes place in a futuristic society. It is also a very structured society that has eliminated prejudice. At age twelve everyone is assigned a job. Jonas receives the a high honored job called the Receiver of Memory. This individual holds all of the memories for the community. Upon the transfer of the memories Jonas begins to see the truth of his communities past. It was not full of sunshine and happiness, but it was full of darkness and war.
What memories would you like to hold onto forever? Are they dark and gloomy or are they happy and loving? Why did you choose these memories?
Some hints: Look at your family's history or you childhood. Look at pictures from when you were little or from last week.
